Intro to the course:

Project Search at ASDA Toryglen is a full-time, one year transition to work programme designed to support learners to move into paid employment. This course is designed for adults who require additional support for learning.


Delivered on site at ASDA Toryglen, the course combines real workplace experience with college learning, helping learners build confidence, independence, and practical skills for work.

The programme is delivered in partnership with South Lanarkshire College, South Lanarkshire Council, and ASDA, and follows the nationally recognised DFN Project Search model.

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for adults who require additional support for learning including those with autism and/or a learning disability, who want to gain paid employment and benefit from structured workplace support.

Applicants should be motivated to work towards greater independence and employment.

What will I study?

Learners will study a range of employability and life skills, including:

  • Workplace communication and teamwork
  • Customer service and problem-solving
  • Time management and professional behaviour
  • Health and safety in the workplace
  • Money management
  • CV writing, interview skills, and job applications

Learners will also develop practical retail skills through work placements in ASDA departments such as:

  • Bakery
  • Online shopping
  • Customer service
  • George
  • General merchandising

Additional training opportunities may include:

  • First Aid
  • Barista skills
  • SQA Employability Award
  • SVQ in Retail Skills (where appropriate)

Next step course options

Depending on progress, learners may move on to:

  • employment with continued in-work support
  • other employability or vocational courses

Progression is discussed individually with each learner.

How will I be assessed?

There will be ongoing written and practical assessments.

Learners are assessed through:

  • observation in the workplace
  • practical tasks and activities
  • portfolio evidence
  • lecturer, job coach and mentor feedback

Project SEARCH continues to support learners for up to 12 months after employment begins.

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants must:

  • be 18 years old or over before the course start date
  • live within a South Lanarkshire postcode
  • have an additional support need (including autism and/or a learning disability)
  • have a desire to move into paid employment
  • be able to travel independently or be working towards this

What are the interview arrangements?

Applicants will take part in:

  • an information and activity session at South Lanarkshire College
  • a workplace visit and practical activity at ASDA, Toryglen
  • 1:1 interview

This helps ensure the course is the right fit for the learner.

Fees, finance and funding

Fees for full time is £1008

This course is eligible for Bursary.
